Overview
Orbit is a Chrome extension that lives in the browser’s side panel and checks the current page for accessibility issues using axe-core. Results are grouped by impact, and selecting one highlights the element on the page so it’s easy to find and fix. Beyond the scanner, Orbit includes colour tools and an accessibility checklist. Every scan runs locally in the browser, so no data ever leaves the user’s device.
What I learned
I learned how a Chrome extension is really three separate programs (the side panel, a background service worker, and a content script) that can only talk by passing messages. Getting a scan request from the UI into the page and the results back again taught me a lot about extension architecture, and working with axe-core deepened my understanding of WCAG.
Looking back
Next I’d add exportable reports and suggested fixes for each issue, so teams can track and share their progress.
